On the day of Bhai Dooj (Bhaiya Dooj), sisters in India pray for their brothers for a happy and long life. It is a festival celebrated by Hindus on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Karthik.
According to a popular legend in Hindu mythology, after slaying the evil demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra who gave him a warm welcome with sweets and flowers. She also affectionately applied tilak on Krishna's forehead. Some believe this to be the origin of the festival.
While feeding sweets to the brother, it is recommended to recite the following mantra:
Bhratus tabaa grajaataaham
Bhunksa bhaktamidam shuvam preetaye
Yama raajasya
Yamunaah visheshatah
Meaning of the mantra:
I'm your sister, eat this sacred rice for the pleasure of 'Yam Raj' and 'Yamuna'.
